Motivation to Exercise

We all know exercise is good for us but…. how do we motivate ourselves to do it? It’s important to have DEEP reasons why you want to exercise; not just “I want to lose 30 lbs.” Why do you want to lose 30 lbs.? What benefits will you gain in life? How will you FEEL when you lose the weight? What will you LOOK like? What clothes will you be able to wear? Won’t it be great to increase your self esteem? You can do other things while you exercise like read (if on equipment), pray, “download” from the day, memorize scriptures, listen to a book on CD or just enjoy the nature outside. It can actually be a time you get alone from everyone else or spend time with your family. Susan (see picture) told me, “Exercise is a lot more relaxing than I realized; it really helps you deal with stress.” That is so true. Did you know some of the same hormones get released when you exercise as when people take anti-depressants? They are called endorphins which help with your mood and how you feel. Not only does exercising make you feel great, lose weight, have more energy, make you look younger, helps you sleep better, reduces stress and makes you strong again but it’s a time you can use to relax, read, pray, be alone or spend time with loved ones! What a deal! It’s all about what you focus on. If you focus on how much you don’t like it, then you’re probably not going to do it, right? But if you focus on all the benefits it will bring you, then your chances are much higher of following through. A lot people drop out of exercising because they don’t see results. It’s important to apply good nutrition WITH exercise and make some small improvements in your eating habits.
